CONSIT History
Cross River State College of Nursing Sciences, Itigidi (CONSIT) began as a School of Nursing through the instrumentality of the Management Committee of Eja Memorial Joint Hospital, Itigidi — driven by the need for trained nursing personnel. Full accreditation
Through the commitment of the Cross River State Government, the support of development partners including the World Health Organization (WHO), and successive administrations, the institution regained accreditation after a period of regulatory suspension and was granted full accreditation by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria in 2018.
College status — CONSIT
In response to the evolving landscape of nursing education and the introduction of the National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) framework, the Cross River State Government transformed the institution into the Cross River State College of Nursing Sciences, Itigidi (CONSIT).
Expanded mandate
This transition aligns the College with national educational standards and reflects its expanded mandate to provide high-quality education in Nursing, Midwifery, Public Health Nursing, and other healthcare-related disciplines.
Resource verification
With support from Sen. Liyel Imoke, Sen. Prof. Sir Ben Ayade, and WHO, human and material resources were harnessed and NMCN was invited for resource verification.
Provisional restored
The NMCN visit restored provisional accreditation status and lifted the embargo on admission for two years.
Intake of fifty
Students were admitted with a yearly intake of fifty students as approved by NMCN.
Withdrawal
Provisional accreditation status was withdrawn by NMCN.
Admission embargo
An embargo was placed on students’ intake, pausing admissions until standards could be restored.
Provisional NMCN approval
Academic activities commenced in 1981 after receiving provisional approval from the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN).
First intake
The State government showed full interest, gave subvention to the school, and admitted the first cohort of student nurses.
Ongoing training
From then on, the school trained student nurses on provisional accreditation status until later regulatory challenges.
Buildings ready
Building and equipping of the school were completed, preparing the institution for formal training of nurses.
Visionary origin
The College traces its origin to the visionary efforts of the Hospital Management Committee of Eja Memorial Joint Hospital, Itigidi, which identified the need to train qualified nursing personnel to meet the growing healthcare needs of the community.
Ministry approval
Following approval by the Cross River State Ministry of Health in 1976, the institution was established through the collective support of the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria, the Itigidi community, and the State Government.
Community labour
The project commenced through direct voluntary labour from the community, laying the foundation for nursing education in Itigidi, headquarters of Abi Local Government Area.
