Our journey

CONMSIT History

Cross River State College of Nursing and Midwifery Sciences, Itigidi (CONMSIT) began as a School of Nursing through the instrumentality of the Management Committee of Eja Memorial Joint Hospital, Itigidi — driven by the need for trained nursing personnel. Explore the milestones that shaped the college from community beginnings to full accreditation and ND/HND transition.

Yearly intake

  1. Accreditation visit

    Having remedied all errors and inadequacies recommended by NMCN, another accreditation visit was embarked upon.

  2. Full accreditation

    The school was granted full accreditation by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria.

  3. College status

    Cross River State enacted a law changing the School of Nursing, Itigidi to Cross River State College of Nursing, Midwifery and Public Health Sciences, Itigidi.

  4. ND/HND curriculum

    WHO, with support from Global Affairs Canada (GAC), partnered with Cross River State to harmonize and domesticate the NMCN/NBTE curriculum on ND/HND for a smooth transition.

  1. Resource verification

    With support from Sen. Liyel Imoke, Sen. Prof. Sir Ben Ayade, and WHO, human and material resources were harnessed and NMCN was invited for resource verification.

  2. Provisional restored

    The NMCN visit restored provisional accreditation status and lifted the embargo on admission for two years.

  3. Intake of fifty

    Students were admitted with a yearly intake of fifty students as approved by NMCN.

  1. Withdrawal

    Provisional accreditation status was withdrawn by NMCN.

  2. Admission embargo

    An embargo was placed on students’ intake, pausing admissions until standards could be restored.

  1. May — Provisional approval

    The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (N&MCN) gave provisional approval for commencement of training.

  2. June — First intake

    The State government showed full interest, gave subvention to the school, and admitted the first fifteen (15) students.

  3. Ongoing training

    From then on, the school trained student nurses on provisional accreditation status until 2012.

  1. Buildings ready

    Building and equipping of the school were completed, preparing the institution for formal training of nurses.

  1. February — Ministry approval

    The Ministry of Health, Calabar granted approval for a School of Nursing at Itigidi after a request from the Medical Board of the Synod of the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria.

  2. Community labour

    The project commenced through direct voluntary labour from the community, driven by the need for trained nursing personnel at Eja Memorial Joint Hospital, Itigidi.
